Seamus Murphy
Seamus Murphy is the Executive Director of San Francisco Bay Ferry, which operates water transit service throughout the region.
Murphy has been recognized as a leader focused on building strong coalitions that can effectively advocate for solutions to the industry’s most pressing challenges.
Prior to joining SF Bay Ferry, Murphy spent over a decade overseeing external affairs and strategic communications for the San Mateo County Transit District (District), which operates the Caltrain commuter rail system and SamTrans bus service. As the District’s Chief Communications Officer, Murphy led efforts to secure funding for transformative projects including the $2 billion Caltrain Electrification Project. He was also responsible for advancing state legislation that led to voter approval of revenue measures creating over $200 million/year in new transportation investment for improvements and services throughout the San Francisco Peninsula.
Since joining SF Bay Ferry in 2021, Murphy has led the reinvention of its service, positioning the system a regional leader in post-pandemic ridership recovery, and securing the transit industry’s highest customer satisfaction rating. He also initiated the agency’s Rapid Electric Emission-free Ferry (REEF) Program, which will create the nation’s first high-speed, zero-emission ferry network.
