Al Martinez is an Executive Officer, Operations at the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro).  In this role, Al is responsible for overseeing Metro’s Bus and Rail Fleet Systems that support transit service to 1.3 million daily riders. Al’s primary responsibilities include managing the fleet and operator scheduling systems, fleet management and CAD/AVL systems, fleet video and audio systems, fleet arrival systems, passenger count and announcement systems as well as system oversight of the Bus and Rail Fleet Operations Centers.  Al is also implementing the Bus Lane Enforcement Program for Metro and is working to support state legislation for an expanded Countywide implementation.Prior to his role in Operations, Al was a Deputy Executive Director in IT and Program Manager in Planning where he gained an appreciation for the various system environments used in the different business units at LA Metro.  He has authored various publications on transit service and is a member of the State of California Leadership network.  Al was awarded Project of the Year by SmartRail USA in 2005 for implementing Metro’s Intelligence Based Surveillance System.  Al is a member of APTA, ITS and various other national transportation associations where he is involved in developing standards and best practices for the transportation and transit industry.Al has been at LA Metro for 20+ years and previously worked at Caltrans in Los Angeles where he was involved in the Northridge Earthquake recovery effort of the collapsed freeway network and incident management response throughout LA County.Al has a BS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a master’s in business administration MBA.  He was a previous Parking and Transportation Commissioner for the City of Whittier and is currently a California Lemon Law Arbitrator.  Al enjoys running, skiing, tennis and traveling; and resides in Whittier, California.
