Diana Caiza

Mayor, Municipality of Ambato
Speaker
Special Guest

She was born on June 3, 1987. Since childhood, she has been seen as a leader and agent of change and transformation through her defense of interculturalism, the rights of indigenous and peasant women, her confrontation of political violence, and the construction of local norms for the recognition of peoples and nationalities as part of a more intercultural and plurinational state.

As a young woman, she attended the Dolores Cacuango de Chibuleo organization's school for women leaders. During her secondary education, she acquired academic knowledge, as well as social, ethical, and leadership skills at the María Natalia Vaca and Stephen Hawking schools. She earned a degree in business administration from the National University of Loja and later obtained a master's degree in administration from Indoamérica University. Fifteen years ago, she set out to contribute to the development of the automotive industry in the canton of Ambato. The young woman from the Chibuleo community broke many myths with this role, which is considered to be only for men.She began her political life in 2016 when she was appointed alternate councilor of Ambato. In the 2019 sectional elections, she was elected rural councilor and immediately appointed deputy mayor of the city. Diana Caiza became the first indigenous woman mayor of the canton of Ambato. After 203 years of political emancipation, her name resonates in the history of the garden city, challenging entrenched norms and opening a new chapter in leadership.
